Lovely Finds: The Coveted & Mary Kate Steinmiller's style**

Just clicked on this site, the Coveted, while getting my daily dose of because i'm addicted and I'm obsessed! I'm totally in love with the photography on this site, and the fact that we get to peek into the closets of the most fashionable people! I'm even more in love with featured Teen Vogue Fashion Market Editor Mary Kate Steinmiller's style. She says she wears mostly skirts made of rich fabrics paired with simple crew neck tops and sweaters, and tons of heels. I love how the way she describes her personal style is so simple but the outcome is so rich and refined. Makes me want to emulate this idea of just skirts, heels, vintage jewelry, and basic tops for a more classic and simple closet!

Lovely Weddings: My Sister's Bridal Shower

My sister’s garden themed bridal shower was at Plumeria Beach House at the Kahala Hotel in Hawaii. Everything turned out perfect, and I especially loved the ambiance of the restaurant and told my sister I’d love to have my own bridal shower here some day! The service was amazing, everyone enjoyed the food, and the strawberry shortcake was the best I’ve ever had! For the centerpieces (which also served as favors) I chose pink Lisianthus, off-white spray roses, and white stock to put in mini bud vases adorned with green ribbon and personalized with each guest’s initial. I set out 4 jewelry stands (purchased from Urban Outfitters) with assorted jewelry from Forever21 for the guests to choose as additional favors. I had so much fun shopping for all the jewelry and saved a lot of money by creating the DIY bud vases with Martha Stewart tags and letter stickers, and pearl and rhinestone stickers I bought from Michaels. I also used Martha Stewart labels for the prizes, which were easy to make since the labels are so pretty to begin with. Can someone else please get engaged so I can plan another bridal shower? Baby showers are acceptable, too!

The pearl and jewel embellishments + the lightweight pale gold shimmery fabric = perfection.

Too bad it comes with a steep price tag of $995.

My idea: A loose cream colored silk button down top (sleeves rolled up)with just the front tucked into very light khaki trousers with rolled cuffs, a dark caramel colored brown belt, and a bunch of pearl necklaces.

I'm extremely honored to have been chosen to be maid of honor at my sister's wedding next month, and am super excited that her big day is coming soon! But that just means my days left to find a pair of shoes to wear to her wedding are numbered!

I have to find a silver sandal that goes with a tea length strapless dress with a decently high stiletto heel, and preferably platform. I started searching websites and found a few "nice" pairs, but as always, got a little side-tracked ... and bumped into some drool-worthy heels that I just have to share with you all:

Shadowbox Frame + 2 Pins + Sack that previously contained Ad Hoc Fried Chicken mix

I'd been meaning to tackle this project for quite some time now. For Christmas 2009, J gave me a bunch of things from Williams Sonoma...one of which was a bag of Ad Hoc Fried Chicken mix. I thought it'd be cool (and resourceful) to frame the bag instead of just throwing it away because it's special in two ways. 1) It was a gift from J, and 2) We've actually been to the restaurant a couple of times and really like it!

I found the shadowbox frame at a local craft store for $19.99. It came with pins, which I used to pin the Ad Hoc bag into the already upholstered backing. Then hang (I put mine in the kitchen). Simple as that!

Lovely Cakes: Strawberry Strawberry Cake

I must be on a baking kick. I blame it on the Rice Krispy Treats I made last week when I was looking for something sweet and found the ingredients in my pantry to fix them up. Which was followed by the cupcakes for last weekend's tailgate. Yesterday, I had a hankering for Strawberry Cake.

When J and I were in Dallas, J took me to get the most awesome strawberry cake from Celebrity Cafe and Bakery in Highland Park Village. So in an effort to recreate this delicious cake, I found a strawberry cake recipe and a strawberry frosting recipe and combined them. (I had to triple the frosting recipe to adequately cover the cake)

The result? Very close to the cake from Celebrity Cafe & Bakery. I think next time I'll add more pureed strawberries to both the cake and the frosting. You can never have enough strawberries!

Today is the second to the last tailgate for the UH football season. This week, my J and I are responsible for bringing a dessert. I haven't baked in a very long time, partially because I've been lazy and partially because everytime I bake for no reason, we end up eating the goods which is not a good thing!

I've been searching for a good chocolate cupcake recipe for a while now and I think I've come across the perfect recipe! I came across Cake on the Brain, a blog by a Canadian who loves food and baking. She posted a recipe from Cooks Illustrated for Dark Chocolate Cupcakes and topped them off with Vanilla Swiss Buttercream Meringue Frosting by Martha Stewart. The cupcake recipe is a keeper...they are not super moist, but not dry and very tasty. I'm on the fence about the frosting though, because the buttercream is not very sweet and very buttery. I may try a different frosting the next time I make these cupcakes.

J said it reminds him of a Hostess Cupcake.

Ever since I started exploring vegan foods, I started exploring the different types of yogurts. Although the point was to experiment with non-dairy yogurts like coconut or soy yogurts, in the process I've realized that those ones taste like shit, and Greek yogurt is the bomb! Non-fat greek yogurt, plain, with honey, to be specific. Although some greek yogurt brands come with honey on the side, Yoplait is much cheaper, but their honey flavored yogurt seems to have the honey mixed in, which is a lot less fun than getting gobs of honey you can actually almost chew on. So I just buy the plain Yoplait and add my own. It's yummy, smooth, creamy, healthy (aside from the fact that honey is not used in moderation for this recipe, it's probably still better than the artificial sweeteners they use in other fat-free yogurts), and has tons of protein and calcium. I've honestly never liked honey before, but now it seems I can't get enough of the stuff.

Honey is my new obsession!

These are my faves from the Lanvin for H&M collection to come out November 23rd. I wonder how fast they'll sell out-- like within hours? Or days? Or is it more like minutes? I usually don't succumb to fashion events like trunk shows, store openings, or even huge sales, because I hate crowds, and let's be honest, I'm really no "fashionista." But this one I might actually plan ahead for. M & R, you with me? I'm dying for that zebra trench and necklace as logical, useful, wearable, and therefore justifiable purchases. But the dresses are absolutely irresistible—the styles are fun and classy, and the detailing definitely shows the designer quality of the pieces.

I've been ordering makeup online at www.Sephora.com a lot lately, and I've been loving the samples I get with every order. Every beauty product out there makes lofty claims and promises, but how many times have you purchased some well-reviewed name brand product only to find out it seems to work just as good as some generic product you already have at home, and for triple or quadruple the price? So spending $50 on some moisturizer I've never tried is such a risky investment. I've definitely discovered some great products through free samples, so Birchbox is sounding pretty appealing right now. Every month, you pay $10 to receive a box of hand picked deluxe samples, along with instructions and tips on how to use the products. They also apparently have informative articles and tutorials on their website on various products, which sounds like a great idea. What good is a great beauty product when you're using it all wrong?

Seeing the products they have on their website currently is tempting me to join Birchbox...

CANDY LAND was my favorite game ever! Princess Lolli and Queen Frostine were my favorite characters, I thought they were so pretty. And I loved Gumdrop Mountains (and who wasn't excited to make it to the shortcut through the mountain pass?!)! The game is so simple, and just like so many other board games, but the fact that there are different places for different types of candy with fun characters residing in them makes it such a likable game. I never realized they changed the game every 10 years until I looked up the game just now--

Four of us went to a conference for work in Schaumburg, Illinois. It's about a 45 minute drive to Chicago, but it was a nice area. We went to Portillo's because we wanted to eat a Chicago dog and someone at the conference recommended it, and it was sooo good! For someone who doesn't like hot dogs, I was amazed that I absolutely loved it.

J & I made it a point to visit the Texas State Fair while we were in Dallas. We were dying to sample all the unique and yummy deep fried food that we would never be able to find here in the Islands. Our favorites included the chicken fried bacon, deep fried frito pie, and fried green tomatoes. The deep fried beer was a soggy-cracker-miss, and the deep fried butter was surprisingly yummy - but only in a one bite and you're done sort of way. We even stopped in at an aquarium where we saw an albino crocodile and fed stingrays (super cool but sorry, no pictures for that) and also visited a petting zoo where we had fun feeding all the animals.

This is what I picture minimalism to be at its best. Her bedroom is all white, and straight out of an Ikea showroom (which I might have just made up knowing that she is from Sweden). It's incomprehensible that this girl's closet comprises of just two racks. And yet every outfit of hers is so complete. I love every single one of them! The idea of an almost all-black wardrobe sounds so tempting--the fact that everything matches multiplies your outfit permutations by like a million! And don't you just love that yellowish-greenish top/dress? It just wouldn't be as special in an all-neon wardrobe.

I'm addicted to her blog, even though the Google Swedish-to-English translation just doesn't quite cut it--although it's pretty entertaining to read all the broken English.

Cook one 15 oz. can of chickpeas (drained and washed), in an ovenproof skillet with 2 tablespoons olive oil and 1 teaspoon each of cumin and smoked paprika, 2 minutes. Season with salt, then bake 20 minutes at 425 degrees.

I haven't tried any lasagna recipes before because it seemed intimidating but, this weekend I was feeling ambitious. I found this Lasagna Roll recipe on the Food Network website. I somehow convinced myself that lasagna rolls were easier to make than a pan of lasagna because I would be making it in smaller portions- which of course is not true but it got me to try the recipe =P

I chose this recipe because:
1. Giada's dishes look really good on the Food Network
2. This recipe received over 1000 reviews and is still showing up with a 5 star rating.
3. I wanted to make something with prosciutto in it, since J loves this stuff.

This recipe was definitely a success! I can finally say I've made lasagna and to top it off, J loved it! However, as much as I love having leftovers, I'm not really looking forward to this entire week's lunch special...spinach lasagna rolls.

This outfit is perfect for the psuedo-summer we're having, during which I am trying to embrace the idea of wearing lots of black. I disagree with whatever or whoever tried to ingrain in my head the idea that sundresses are the uniform for summer. While I love bright, colorful, flowery dresses, I hate to feel I can't or shouldn't wear something just because of what season it is. However, I am probably the only person with this mental block to overcome... But I am proud to say that I've finally broken my you-can't-wear-silver-with-gold-jewelry mental block. Yay for baby steps!

Also, I need me some T by Alexander Wang basics! I love that skirt!

As funny as I find this post, the sad truth is that I agree with Lulu here, and even more sad is that I could totally be the girl in this picture. It's no secret I'm obsessed with J.Crew. So when the new catalog arrived in the mail yesterday, I eagerly flipped through it and found so many items I want! Ironically, I tend to prefer Fall and Winter clothing to Spring and Summer, which doesn't really work well with my tropical weather and lack of actual seasons. During the Spring and Summer months, I tend to ease up on clothing purchases and kind of go crazy during the Fall and Winter. I can't help it if I love dark colors, sweaters, cardigans, scarves, tights, and jackets!

Since S had such a horrible experience with her Chanel purchase this week and decided she wanted a gray Balenciaga instead, I was excited when I saw this on Purse Blog today. I think it would be a good (and also cheaper) alternative to the Chanel she was originally looking at. What I love about it is that it is embossed lizard, and made of lambskin, which is much softer (and MUCH cheaper) than actual lizard skin.

The bag is gorgeous! You should get this, S!

Meet the newest addition to my shoe collection! I've been ogling over clogs all summer long and I finally found the perfect pair at Nordstrom Rack last weekend. These embody everything I've been looking for in a clog... platform heel, butter soft leather, cute details, deep caramel color and the right price. I picked these up for less than half the retail price (marked down to $89 from $198)!!

The other day I saw these See by Chloe Slingback wedges (as seen on Rachel Bilson... love her!) on Who What Wear and instantly fell in love. At $270 the price is a bit steep for a trendy shoe... but at any weak moment i may cave-in and make them mine!

These Animal Cracker Cookies looked so cute on the 101 Cookbooks blog (although obviously I used my own Hello Kitty cookie cutters instead of animal shapes-- and they're still so cute!) and the recipe sounded so delicious. I love coconut flavored anything, and I love animal crackers, so I had high expectations for this cookie recipe and it did not disappoint! The cookies have a decently strong coconut flavor to them, and they're sweet but not as sweet as your typical cookie (just like animal crackers). Now I just need to find me another use for the rest of the $10 jar of Organic unrefined Virgin Coconut Oil I bought just for this recipe... I guess I'll just have to bake another batch (since I've already eaten almost all of them)!

Even though my grandma is no longer physically with us, I know she was happy that we celebrated my uncle's birthday (3 days after she passed). My uncle loves my mom's spam musubis, so he was thrilled to get this cake. I was exhausted after my first day back to work, so I didn't frost it very well. =/ Stay tuned cause my aunty's birthday is coming up and I plan to make a full on rose bouquet cake (my aunty and grandma love flowers). =)

Anyone who knows me well, knows how much I despise chicken (unless battered and fried). But in an effort to eat healthier dinners, my J has stressed the importance of our consuming more chicken dishes...which unfortunately does not include fried chicken.

So I went online and found a recipe for Lime Chicken Soft Tacos on Allrecipes.com. It is fast and easy to make, and surprisingly very yummy. This recipe also has 1,202 reviews with a 4.5 out of 5 star rating.

Now, I did make a few substitutions which I think made the recipe a bit different:

Instead of throwing green onions into the mixture while cooking, I opted to top the tacos with fresh cilantro before eating

I omitted the oregano

We did not top the taco with lettuce

I used queso fresco instead of monterey jack cheese

I diced an avocado to include as a taco topping

We squeezed a bit of fresh lime juice on the tacos instead of using salsa

Yes, I realize that I made a lot of changes. But it got me to eat chicken and I definitely plan to make it again and again.

I am strangely drawn to this Steve Madden Annton shoe ($129.95). I like that it's a peep-toe-wedge-oxford-bootie all in one because it hits many of the current shoe trends at the same time without looking absolutely ridiculous. I'm not sure how 'office appropriate' it is though, and that usually is the deciding factor in my shoe purchases. What are your thoughts on this shoe? Do you think it can be toned down with the right outfit to be more office appropriate?

J's visit over the 4th of July weekend was the perfect opportunity for us to exercise our creativity with a little craft project that H posted about here (thanks R for picking up all the supplies!). While we had a slow start, (we probably sat around staring at the plain white men's tshirts for a good 45 minutes before picking up the scissors and making the first cut) I was very impressed with the end product! It's amazing how different they all look and what you can create with just a simple tshirt and thread.

Found this recipe randomly online. The name and the simplicity of this recipe makes it quite unappealing, but luckily I gave it a try because it was surprisingly tasty and super easy!

Ingredients
1 (16 ounce) package bow tie pasta
1 (6 ounce) package spinach leaves
2 cups fresh basil leaves
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
4 ounces prosciutto, diced
salt and ground black pepper to taste
3/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup toasted pine nuts

Directions
Fill a large pot with lightly salted water and bring to a rolling boil over high heat. Once the water is boiling, stir in the bow tie pasta and return to a boil. Cook the pasta uncovered, stirring occasionally, until the pasta has cooked through, but is still firm to the bite, about 12 minutes. Rinse with cold water to cool. Drain well in a colander set in the sink.

Toss the spinach and basil together in a large bowl. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat; cook and stir the garlic in the hot oil; stir in the prosciutto. Remove from heat. Add to the bowl with the spinach and basil mixture; toss to combine. Pour in the drained pasta and retoss. Season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle with the Parmesan cheese and pine nuts to serve.

I have just two vintage pieces in my entire wardrobe ~ a waist-cinching belt that I found in my Mom's closet from the 70's, and a brown reptile skin bag I purchased in a vintage shop while on vacation in Florence, Italy. Both are definitely favorites in my wardrobe, especially the belt because of it's rich caramel color and cool buckle.

Today happened to be the day I wore both pieces together. The belt adds shape to my flowy pale-pink dress (from T. Lynn!) and the bag adds some office appropriateness to an otherwise too-frilly outfit. I kept warm in the chilly office with my cardigan (pictured above).

I saw this book on Terry Richardson's blog and was curious about it so I looked it up on Amazon. I went to Barnes & Noble and skimmed through some of the pages and had to buy it. Only strange/embarrassing thing about buying this book (besides the title, and people thinking you wannabe "classy") is that it was in the self-help section of the bookstore! Whatevs, I have no shame. This book is hilarious!

One of the many entertaining topics Derek Blasburg writes about is throwing a fabulous party, and based on my previous knowledge of house parties, I could definitely use a tip or two! In my experience, a house party either includes sitting in someone's garage on beach chairs drinking Natural Light and eating lots of fatty fried/grilled/smoked/marinated meat or raw fish (learned from growing up in Hawaii), or it involves stacks of red plastic cups, jungle juice, party fouls, and keg stands in someone's dirty old house with sticky floors and couches that the residents had picked up off the side of the road (learned from college).

And while my known definition of a party is not too shabby, I'd have to say, basically, I'm very un-classy.

On Saturday, my J & I went to dinner at Le Guignol, a quaint French restaurant in town. We both aren't real fans of French food, but heard this restaurant was fantastic so we decided to give it a try. The food was fantastic! So flavorful and delicious, with perfect portion sizes and affordable prices. The restaurant is also BYOB so we enjoyed a bottle of Du Mol "Ryan" Pinot Noir ~ one of my faves! We definitely plan to go back again soon.

As you all probably know, I'm pretty obsessed with yoga, and I'm also into workout DVD's because I have yet to bring myself to pay for a gym membership, and I enjoy working out in the privacy of my own home where I can slack off as much as I want without anyone seeing. So I was really excited when I heard that Jennifer Aniston's yoga instructor Mandy Ingber came out with a DVD workout! Mandy Ingber is quirky and funny, and she provides unique perspectives to yoga and working out in general. The soundtrack is really great, the videography is artistic and aesthetically pleasing, and the workout is pretty difficult (I didn't fully break a sweat, which I was disappointed about, but my weak ass couldn't even do 100% of the lunges, and my legs were hurting the next day!!!!). She combines a lot of common (but really good) exercises with yoga poses, like crescent pose + lunges, chair pose + squats, and boat pose + sit ups. This is super good because it's a semi-cardio/sculpting workout, but as a result feels a little less like real yoga. Seriously though, watching Mandy Ingber on the TV screen is pretty motivating in itself cause she has an awesome body.

If I just really want to do yoga (yunno, mind+body workout type thing), I think I might prefer Rodney Yee, even though I feel silly watching him on TV, with his teeny tiny speedo outfits and long braided hair (kind of a strange sight to see). But his power yoga workout is hard and fun, and he's so good at making it look easy which is extremely motivating.

1 in 10 visits. That's the odds of me actually finding something when I visit Nordstrom Rack. Today, I took a PTO day from work and decided to go shopping! After a pretty unsuccessful time at Ala Moana, I meandered over to Nordstrom Rack. What a great idea that was!

First, I stumbled upon these super cute suede buckle booties by Franco Sarto....for $40! Despite their appearance, these are pretty versatile shoes and will be perfect to wear to work with a black pencil skirt or on the weekends with skinny jeans.

Then I found these light gold flats with a slight wedge heel from Guess...for $40! Ever since my favorite pair of gold flats got ruined in the rain while on vacation in NYC, I've been searching for a cute, comfortable replacement. The small heel on these flats definitely make it a lot more padded and comfortable to wear.

And finally, the best shoe deal I have ever scored! I was walking in the "designer" section of the shoe area and saw these dark gold, almost bronze peep toe shoes by Bally sitting on the shelf. Since I love to wear peep toe shoes and am a sucker for shiny objects, I picked them up, turned them over...and saw the price was $80. What? I checked again, thinking I missed the 1 before the 80. Nope, it was $80! I tried them on excitedly and they fit perfectly! Definitely the best shoe deal I have ever scored! Woo hoo! What an awesome way to kick off the weekend! =)

I have been in the market for a new blush since my go-to blush, Nars (Orgasm), has dwindled down to just the edges of the container. I was also looking forward to being a bit more adventurous with cheek color after being inspired by my super-cute hair stylist who adorns her cheeks with a bright pink hue. So while waiting for my eyebrow pencil (I cannot live without this eyebrow pencil, it turns my thin colorless wisps into half-decent brows! I've actually gotten compliments on my eyebrows, so I know it works wonders) to be sharpened at my local Shu Uemura retail store, I played with all the pretty blushes and stumbled across this perfect pearly peachy blush. The pigment is quite intense and with just a couple sweeps across my cheek I have a new bright and happy face that shouts "it's spring!" :)

side note: I have to mention how my love affair with Shu Uemura started, with their famous gold eyelash curler of course! If you do not have one, go out and buy one immediately!

So... I'm gushing to H about how much i LOVE my new blush when she blindsides me with this horrible news!

I was ready to go out and buy several reserves of my beauty staples, but it appears (for now) that they plan to continue online sales in the U.S. whew! I'm still extremely saddened by the news, especially in the wake of another of my cosmetic favorites, Prescriptives, exit a few months back. What has the world come to?! I realize this shouldn't be so high on my priority list... but this bad economy is really taking a toll on my makeup bag!

By no means do I fancy plaid shirts. I don't think I've even worn a plaid shirt since the 6th grade. But I am in love with this black & cream linen button down from Saks Off Fifth. The linen makes the shirt soft and moveable...not stiff like a lot of button down work shirts. And the black and cream doesn't scream 'lumberjack!' like some of the other plaid shirts I've seen in stores. This morning my male coworker looked at me and said 'you look like an urban cowboy.' I think I'll take that as a compliment.

While it seems everyone is scrambling at the last minute trying to find the right dress to wear to S and J's big day, I realize I should probably start shopping around for something to wear to B's brother's wedding in July. I know it's a while from now, but almost every single time I have an occasion to shop for, I end up buying something I only kind of like, or wearing something I already have. While I'm not against reusing clothes by any means, the three weddings I'll be going to in Hawaii are probably among the most "important" functions I'll be attending all year (probably all my life too!) so I hope to at least be wearing something different at each one! So I'm trying to prevent the headache and stress of finding a dress by doing some research... just to see what's out there, what style I might want to focus my energy looking for, and what price range I'll be looking at.

Although price range will probably be one of the most important factors, I still feel like I'm pretty far out from the wedding in July so I did a little "daydreaming." I don't wear expensive clothes, and I don't have an impressive income... so why are all the dresses I love at least $200? And why do they never have my size?! The only dresses on sale for almost affordable prices are all sold out in my size! And by "affordable" I mean somewhere under $200, which I don't know is actually affordable for me, but hey clothes are my priority so I must admit that my definition of "affordable clothes" is a teensy bit skewed.

Oh how I would be so happy with a wardrobe of these beautiful dresses.  They are all so gorgeous.  The first dress is one of my favorites-- click on the link to see the lace up close, and the back of the dress, it's so cute.  I don't think the Anna Sui dress would look nice on me and it's a little too structured and stiff looking for my taste (hawaii wedding = flow-ey and light, right?) but I still love it.  Most of the dresses are a mix between the kind of style I just love (classic, sophisticated?) and what I think would be flattering for me.  As you can tell, a couple of the dresses would definitely NOT be flattering on me nor would I even try to make them work (a.k.a. twenty8twelve venitia dress, something only a tall slender person could pull off, and anything but would be a disaster!), but it's nice to admire how beautiful they look on the models!

Sometimes I think I choose dresses subconsciously because I like a certain model-- in this case you might have already noticed that the brunette chick is modeling 4 of my favorite dresses!  Coincidence?  Maybe.  But I must point out that when looking at Victoria's Secret Catalogs I always go for the lingerie and bikini's that Alessandra Ambrosio is wearing.  Like this bikini, for example.  Ugly bikini, but why do I want to buy it?  Probably because she looks amazing in it.  I know me buying it will not transform me into a model, and I don't expect to look like her in it... but for some reason I want it!  

After looking at the prices and size availability, there really isn't anything I can buy from this batch of dresses.  I guess the hunt continues...
 
P.S. I'm so glad I have something to wear to S's dinner already!!!  And it was well within my ideal price range! =)

Every so often, I get in the mood to eat risotto. I don't know if it's the rich, warm, creaminess of the dish that draws me in, or if it's because it reminds me of my trip to Italy last year, but it's definitely one of my favorite things to eat. If it's on the menu at a restaurant, chances are, I'm ordering it!

It's only fitting that one of my Christmas gifts from Jason last year was a Ruffoni hand-hammered copper risotto pan from Williams-Sonoma (pan).Before Christmas, I happened to point it out to Jason because I loved the copper color and the acorn handle details...but I never imagined he would get it for me! I love it so much, and we plan to get it mongrammed after we get married so it can be a family heirloom!

So last night I decided to make Champagne Risotto with Asparagus and petite Scallops. I followed a recipe I found on the Food Network's website from Giada DeLaurentiis (recipe) and added in some seared scallops to give it a little more substance. The recipe is simple and requires few ingredients, however, it is time consuming because you have to stand over the risotto and stir it constantly so it becomes creamy.

In the past, my risotto attempts had come out drier than I would have liked. I don't know if it was the pan or the recipe, but it turned out great!

For Christmas, B likes to trick me by only wrapping a smallish gift and giving it to me. Then after I open the gift feeling what he hopes is disappointment, he runs into the bedroom to the secret hiding place to get the "real" gift. As the gift opener, it is difficult to know what the right reaction should be. While I am always appreciative of the small gift, which is usually very thoughtful, but yes, "small," in the back of my mind I am waiting for the "real" gift. And there's always the chance that this is the real gift!!! Hopefully we're in sync enough to where we both know what constitutes a real Christmas gift, and what can be considered the small gift. It would be quite unfortunate for me to one day expect him to go running in the room for the real gift, and it not happen. It's not my fault, B brought this upon himself by trying to trick me! Now that I think about it, why would anyone want to trick someone into thinking they got a crappy Christmas gift? Not that any of my small gifts have been crappy by any measure. But now my standards have gotten pretty high as a result of this little game of his...

This past Christmas was no different. My small gift was so great! B got me this book that I didn't even know existed: You Know You Want It, by Gossip Girl Costume Designer Eric Daman. B knows I love Blair Waldorf's style in Gossip Girl, so this was such a thoughtful gift.

Although it's not about Blair Waldorf, it's a beautiful book about finding your style, dressing for your body type, accentuating your features, and understanding the appropriate wardrobe for different occasions. While most of the information in the book is probably common sense to most people, I find it motivating to read because sometimes you can get caught up in the trends and forget to focus on what you really like and what really works for you. It is also a reminder of the wide array of styles and pieces a wardrobe can have, and how beautiful outfits can look even when they're not the latest trend. I like the idea of having my own personal style that won't necessarily change with the seasons or fads.

With that being said, it was a funny coincidence that right after Christmas, an article came out about Eric Daman's book party (see here). In the article he claims that the next "It" accessory is "the statement bracelet." Well thanks to my real Christmas gift from B, it looks like I've already got my "statement bracelet." I think my bracelet is "statement" enough to make me feel current yet classic enough that I'll love it forever and ever.

Obsessions: Oxford Shoes

Since mid-2009 I have been searching for the perfect oxford shoe. I didn't want it to be too masculine, too feminine, too shiny, the toe must not be too pointed or too rounded, the heel must be very low...the list goes on and on. I thought for sure I would find a pair while on vacation in San Francisco since the place is a shopping mecca, but alas, there were not many oxford shoe options. Behold, the Steven Melin Pinked Perforated Oxford in Cognac. At $105, it's quite a bargain compared to other options on the market. However, I have yet to decide whether the shoe matches anything in my closet! Plus, it's not really a wear to work kinda shoe...except on casual Fridays...and then again, it begs the question "what do i wear it with?" The only outfit I can think of would be skinny or straight leg jeans rolled up to above my ankles and the top would definitely have to be relatively plain.

What are your thoughts on this shoe? What would you wear it with?

Months after taking a cake decorating class, I finally decided to make a cake. Our family planned a surprise birthday party for my grandma because we're not sure how many more she will have due to her health issue. So, I thought it would be nice to make a cake especially for her. So here it is. A yellow cake with buttercream frosting. I use the cake mix from the box, but alter it a little so it's lite. The cake becomes fluffy and yummy. =)

Cake Recipe

1 box mix (not the butter recipe)

2 eggs

1 1/3 cup water

Bake as directed

Buttercream Frosting Recipe

1/2 cup unflavored solid Crisco

1/2 cup (1 stick) solid margarine

1 t clear vanilla

1 t clear butter flavoring

1 lb box powdered sugar

1 T Meringue powder

Cream ingredients together on low until they stick together. Then grandually increase to high for about 5 minutes. This makes STIFF icing. For medium or thin frosting add 1-2 T water.

The stiff frosting is good for making roses and decorations. It's best to make a thin frosting to frost the cake. Ya I know, the frosting is soo unhealthy....

This was the best cake I ever made because my grandma looked at the cake, looked at me, and then said "I love you!" I had to hold back my tears because she never says that out loud. I know she always worries about me and loves me a lot, but this cake made her express her feelings out loud. I love you too Grandma!!!

This morning I picked up a package from the post office and it turned out to be a bday present from S! Not only is the necklace super cute, but also happened to match my outfit perfectly. :) I slipped it on and completed my outfit for the day. Thank you S, I love it!

Here's a closer look at my new chunky gold watch (also a gift, thank you D!). I've been searching off and on for a bold faced gold-link watch for a while and was pleasantly surprised that my bf picked out this Marc by Marc Jacobs watch for me all by himself! I was looking for a watch with a completely different shape and probably would have glanced right past this one, but I absolutely love the shape and details of this watch. It's bubble-shaped face and smooth curved links are super cute, and my new favorite accessory!

I've been using OPI nail polish for quite some time and wanted to try essie because I've seen it in magazines many times. Once I put it on my nails, I absolutely loved it! The pastel color is so beautiful and it makes me smile when I look at it. The color I have on is "ST LUCIA LILAC". I think it would look even better if there were rhinestones on it too. =)

Lovely Eats: Neros Steakhouse at Caesars Windsor

This past weekend, C and I went to Caesars Windsor for his birthday. For his birthday dinner, we went to the casino's signature restaurant, Neros Steakhouse.

To start, they gave us this really yummy herbed croissant-like pull apart bread with really smooth and creamy whipped butter. I don't usually eat bread at restaurants but I had 3 pieces of this!!!

Next were our appetizers...We ordered the Peppered Bison Carpaccio (top) and the Escargot (bottom). Both were really good. The Bison was flavored nicely and went really well with the macadamia nut oil and fleur de sel. The escargot was different from what you get at other restauarnts and they gave ALOT of escargot...There was probably like a dozen or so...I think at other places, you get like 6.

For Entrees, I had the Sweet Crab Marscapone Risotto (top)and C had the Alberta Lamb Ribeye (bottom). The risotto was OMG good! It was cooked PERFECTLY! The sad part is that I forgot my leftovers in the hotel fridge...-_-; The lamb looked good...didn't have any cause C ate it all which means it was good. Normally he offers some...haha. His lamb came with Bacon Gnocchi and that was delish.

To end the night, we had dessert. C ordered the sorbet sampler which came with Pineapple, Mango, and Lemon sorbets. They were okay but nothing compared to the cheesecake I ordered which ROCKED! Also, as you can see, they wrote Happy Birthday on my plate cause there was no space on the sorbet plate...haha.

Overall, it was a great dining experience soooooooo if you are ever in Windsor, you should totally check it out (and visit me ^_-).

A few days ago I read on Kim K's twitter that Krispy Kreme had special heart-shaped doughnuts for Valentine's Day. So on our way down to San Diego this weekend, me and D made a quick stop for a sweet treat. Unfortunately... the cute heart-shaped sprinkled doughnuts were only available by the dozen! I resisted being a super fatty and settled for one sourcream old fashioned doughnut. ): Beyond disappointed, but I did manage to sneak a quick picture of the cute creations.

Lovely Cakes: The Great Cupcake Pan

One of the gifts my wonderful fiancee gave me for Christmas 2009 was The Great Cupcake Pan from Williams Sonoma. I decided to try it out for a party and it came out better than I expected!

The cake pan was so easy to use and even came with it's own recipe for a white cake and butter-cream frosting. The only downside to the super cute pan? It takes about 75 minutes to bake all the way through, so it's not a cake to make if you're in a hurry. This is definitely a must have cake pan if you want something cute and fun!

This weekend I decided to try on boots. After strolling up and down the aisles of DSW, I spotted a pair of slouch boots. Although I shouldn't be buying things right now, you know given the state of the economy and all, I couldn't resist. It turned out to be a pretty decent shopping day for me- the NYLA Lisha Slouch Platform Boot is my new best friend. I'm a huge fan of the round toe and I'm still debating if I should buy another pair- It'll be a sad day for me, after these are worn out.

Two compliments later....definitely no buyer's remorse here!
